First of all, I must apologize for not writing sooner than this. I have returned to the second semester of school to work towards my undergraduate degree in business. This is something I have wanted to do for a very long time, but never placed it very high on my list of priorities. I believed I could make enough money without higher education but have come to find that this trend has been severely downsized in today’s economy.
Did you know that over 90,000 students enrolled for their first year of undergraduate studies this past fall in Ontario alone? (Canada, for my friends reading this across the border or overseas). That’s the largest enrolment number in the whole history of higher education in this province, ever! Colleges also saw a 20% increase in attendance of first year students, at 116,000 enrolled.
Well, I have been numbered among the many this year. I had to make some very difficult choices and incredible sacrifices to get here too. Some of you, my friends, have also taken this step (or one very much like it). The thing is that it hasn’t gotten easier either, but we’re pressing on. Do you know why?
What we believe determines our actions. When we don’t know what to think or believe is it really any wonder that we feel lost and are not sure where to go? And then, when we believe in something strongly enough, it’s almost like we can push through anything to get to our goal. Nothing can stop us, we have to do it!
Our belief is our rock. It is what guides our search and is the key to unlocking the secrets of our lives. If you’re wondering what you should be doing, the first thing I would say to do is pray. Making big decisions doesn’t come without some deep contemplation and soul searching. And be ready to sacrifice. Obviously, there are times when you don’t have to choose between either/or and can have both, but gaining one thing often means letting go of another.
If you’re in the thick of things, having made the decision to take a risk and do something you’ve always wanted, good for you! Let this serve as an encouragement to keep going! There are people in your corner. If however, you’re feeling a bit lost and are looking for a sense of purpose, let me encourage you to go to the owner’s manual. Yes, I’m referring to the Bible. It’s where I turn to for hope, instruction, correction, and guidance.
Whether you’re seeking direction for your first steps, or you’re well on your way, take some time today to sit and meditate on what you believe. I trust that what you find there will give you the answers you’re looking for. After all, what we believe really does matter.
